New Trainee Representatives for Intensive Care Medicine

Congratulations to Rachael Challiner and Shond Laha on becoming the new ICM trainee reps.

STC Meeting 11 January 2006

The Intensive Care Medicine specialist training sub-committee met on Weds 11 January.  Items arising from the meeting that may be of interest are listed below. If you have any matters you wish to raise with the ICM STSC please contact the Trainee Representatives.

Joint CCT interviews

The North Western region was recently awarded 4 additional NTNs for Joint CCT training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) and a parent specialty. There are 11 applicants for posts from several different parent specialties. Interviews to be held next month. The STC intend to advertise for further Joint CCT posts towards the ends of summer.

ICM Training Documentation

IICM training is now well-established and the Intercollegiate Board for Training in ICM (IBTICM) specify a number of training documents to be completed during ICM training modules (Basic, Intermediate/Step1, Advanced/Step2), irrespective of your parent specialty. During each ICM module, the relevant competency documents should be completed and signed off as you go along, rather than at the end of the module. This ensures signatures from several trainers and provides greater validity to the documentation.

The ICM competency documents each contain an Assessment of Communication Skills, Attitudes and Behaviour. This section of the competency document must be completed for each ICM module. So, for example, if you do 3 months of Intermediate/Step1 training in one hospital and the other 3 months in another ICU in a different hospital, you must complete two Attitude and Behaviour Forms. This has come about because many trainees are able to sign off all their competencies during their first placement (which is fine) but the ICM STC would like some assessment of your attitudes and behaviour during your second placement as well.

While the IBTICM documentation should satisfy the requirements for parent specialty documentation, it is advised that parent specialty documents are also completed for your ICM modules. For example, anaesthetists should obtain a Workplace Assessment Form and an Attitudes/Behaviour Form for each training module in ICM. This will avoid potential problems caused by a lack of familiarity with IBTICM documentation during parent specialty annual assessments/RITAs. More duplication, I know, but likely to make your annual assessments run smoothly!

See Downloads section for IBTICM training documents in Word format

ICM Annual Assessments (RITA process)

The second North Western ICM RITAs were held on 11th January. The ICM STSC intend to run ICM RITAs twice each year (in January and July) but will continue to provide ICM representation at parent specialty annual assessments as well. The next ICM RITA is likely to be 4th July 2006.

Joint CCT Training Programme (Step 2)

Details of the Step 2 placements for Joint CCT trainees can be found on the website. The placements up to November 2006 are relatively fixed. Further details may be obtained from the Programme Director, Dr P Duncan.

ICM module Evaluation Forms

An evaluation form should be completed at the end of each ICU placement. Please email or post these to the Regional Advisor for ICM, Dr Chris Clarke (details included on the latest version of the evaluation form). Download the form from the website.

ICM Trainees Educational Programme

Dr Greer wishes to organise critical care study days four times per year aimed at senior trainees in with an interest in Intensive Care (not just Joint CCT trainees). Places are limited to a maximum of 30 based upon the current format of the study days. Details of forthcoming study days can be found on the website (Trainees > Meetings). Dr Greer would like to hear from trainees regarding the content of these study days. If you have areas of critical care that you wish to learn more about please contact Dr Greer directly (at the Manchester Royal Infirmary) or via the ICM Trainee Reps.

THE CCST IN INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE
Competency-Based
Training and Assessment

The aim of this booklet is to provide a record of your training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) and all trainees in ICM must maintain it. It will complement the formal competency-based assessments of trainees by their educational supervisors, details of which will be maintained in Parts III, IV and V of the training programme documents. The Intercollegiate Board for training in Intensive Care Medicine will not be able to approve training unless both this Educational Training Record (ETR) and the accompanying Assessments of Competency have been properly completed. This record will also be an essential part of the Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine.

Record of In-Training Assessments (RITAs)

The next set of Intensive Care Trainee assessments (commonly known as RITA-day) will be Wednesday 11 January 2006 at Barlow House, Manchester. Those required to attend will be notified individually by the Post-graduate Deanery Office. Please could I emphasise the importance of the Educational Training Record (ETR). This document must be completed and a copy submitted along with your ICM Competency Documents at your assessment. The ETR has assumed even greater importance as this is the document that will be held by the Deanery as evidence of your training progress. Copies of the ETR can be found on the IBTICM website (see links section). I hope to post downloadable versions of all the relevant documents on this website soon.

New Trainee Representatives for ICM

As I am approaching the end of my ICM training self-nominations are invited for the job of ICM Trainee Rep. At the latest ICM Trainee meeting we decided there should be two reps: one to focus on links with the STC, ANWICU and the ICS as well as continuing to develop the Trainee Section of the ANWICU website; the other to develop educational aspects such as the organisation of trainee meetings and coordinating study days. In order to reflect the varying needs of the ICM trainees we felt that there would be advantages to having an ‘Anaesthetic’ and a ‘Non-Anaesthetic’ representative (referring to the parent specialty of the trainee nominated).

If you wish to put yourself forward for one of the positions please email me your self-nomination (along with a short account of yourself and why you want the job – to be distributed with voting forms) by end of November at the latest. Once I have received the nominations I shall organise a vote. If you would like any details of what is involved, email me.

Manchester Royal Infirmary Critical Care Study Day

The date of the next MRI Critical Care Study Day will be Monday 6th March 2006. Reminders will be sent nearer the time but if you want to get study leave arranged you may.
